Extraordinary times for the Baltimore Symphony Musicians call for extraordinary concerts…
Concerts that testify to the value that we as musicians in a major symphony orchestra bring to our community and that celebrate our special brand of excellence.Being an enthusiast of all things big and brassy, I recently picked up the phone and called my buddies in other, nearby, major league orchestras – Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington’s National, and Semper Fi Brass. I got one enthusiastic “yes” after another from all these generous souls. Together we have conspired, with the help of BSO’s percussion section, to plan Baltimore’s brass concert of the century—Baltimore Symphony Musicians Give Back: A Brass and Percussion Concert for the Community.
That concert will take place on Tuesday, January 8th, at 7pm – kicking off the fresh new year of 2019 and echoing throughout the gorgeous Baltimore Basilica. Conducting will be my friend James Ross, with whom I recently worked at Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra project. He is an outstanding advocate for the future of classical music and orchestral musicians. We are most fortunate that our long-time friend Martin O’Malley will also be there to speak on our behalf.
We will be playing one brilliant work after another – by Gabrieli, Bach, Dukas, Grieg, Strauss, and Wagner. Too much of a good thing, if you ask me. There will even be a birthday greeting sent to Yuri Temirkanov who turns 80 this month, in the form of a Rachmaninov fanfare. You’ll want to be a part of that!
While this is a free concert, we will be taking a collection to benefit My Sister’s Place Women’s Center and to cover the Baslica’s expenses in presenting this concert for us.

The Baltimore Symphony Brass and Percussion, together with their colleagues from the National Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Semper Fi Brass will be uniting for a star-studded performance unlike anything ever seen in Baltimore. James Edward Ross, director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Maryland will conduct.
The evening will be hosted by former Baltimore Mayor and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley.
We look forward to a full house of supporters, fans and community leaders all there to support this worthwhile cause. The attendees will be rewarded with a performance for the ages. Never before have these major stars of the orchestra world united in performance.

This performance is free to the community and no ticket or registration is needed. A free-will offering will benefit Catholic Charities’ My Sister’s Place Women’s Center.
Since 1982, the comprehensive resource center has offered essential resources to women and children experiencing homelessness and poverty in Baltimore City. Services include housing assistance, health care services, education and life skills opportunities, case management, personal services, and links to other community providers. Three hot meals are offered every day. In addition, the center offers a culinary and customer service internship called Learn to Earn, to help clients find or improve their employment opportunities.
