Feature Friday – Colin Sorgi

FEATURE FRIDAY!

Colin Sorgi, viola

***Seasons with BSO: 5

***Hometown: San Antonio, TX

***Age Started: My parents are both violinists so they tried to get me to play something else …cello when I was 4 and piano for three years after that. Eventually they gave into me begging for a violin and I started when I was 9. Fast forward to 2015-ish when I began seriously playing viola and my wife Jaclyn (who is a violist) came to a quartet concert I was playing and said “what are you doing with your life? You need to seriously think about switching to viola!” And the rest is history…

***Favorite Restaurant In Baltimore: Our family LOVES Tuesday Burger Night at Johnny’s in Roland Park. But the true favorite will always be Clavel!

***Pets: Vinny, labradoodle 8 yrs old – Giuseppe, cat 11 yrs old … also Clara (5) and Chloe (2) 😂

***Favorite Composer or two: Prokofiev and Stravinsky… and really any of the other composers in the 1920s…Berg, Bartok, Ravel – what an amazing time for music!

***Memory of BSO Audition: Our first daughter, Clara, was born a little over two weeks after my BSO audition. I’ve always worked well under pressure!

***Favorite Sport: In the past year or so, I’ve become an avid tennis player. I’m currently playing in the spring Tennis Baltimore League. I don’t really know what the opposite of undefeated is but I’m that – currently yet to win a match, but there’s still time! 😂 I also follow the ATP and WTA tours pretty closely, my favorite players are Frances Tiafoe (Maryland native!), Taylor Fritz, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur.

***Fondest Musical Memory: Playing Beethoven 9 on tour in London with the Canadian National Arts Centre Orchestra as a 100th anniversary commemoration of World War 1. It was a joint concert with the London Philharmonic and there were something like 250 people on stage (including the chorus(es)) and Prince (now King!) Charles was in attendance!
